Two Indiana Tech teams earn national victories in prestigious settings

March 25, 2018

Over the weekend, two Indiana Tech teams earned prestigious victories.

At the National Society for Black Engineers annual convention in Pittsburgh, the NSBE debate team of Alexis Morales and Cameron Owens earned national championship honors. Morales also earned second place in the Technical Research competition. Indiana Tech’s duo prevailed over the NSBE debate team from Ohio State for the win.

Indiana Tech’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers was chartered in 2005. Since then, the organization has had a steady presence on campus in order to fulfill the NSBE mission statement, which is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” For more information, visit studentlife.indianatech.edu/nsbe.

The Indiana Tech Cyber Warriors cyber defense team could be bringing home a national title of its own next month after its victory over the weekend.

After winning their fourth straight state title at the beginning of March, the Cyber Warriors won the Erich J. Spengler Midwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition on Saturday in Chicago. With the victory, the Cyber Warriors have earned a berth in the national finals, which are in Orlando, Florida, April 13-15.

Cyber defense teams build and defend their mock production business infrastructure from professional “hackers” who are given the challenge to take each team’s production systems offline and breach their security. While the teams work hard to fend off “hackers,” the competition judging staff will deploy network enhancement and upgrade challenges to teams, judging team’s performance, scoring and supporting the overall event.
